I transformed an ordinary pine cupboard using Tjhoko Paint and products. It now pays homage to the fine artisans, craftsman and their use of pattern and colour, with its bone inlay exterior and colourful interior.
Steps
1. The lattice panels were replaced with solid MDF panels.
2. The bun “feet” were replaced with higher turned “feet” to elevate the cupboard more.
3. The paint colours chosen were inspired by a beautiful quilted throw.
4. The outside was stencilled, to replicate the fine art of tribal bone inlay. Many hours of taping and measuring was spent, to ensure that the pattern in the frame corresponded.
5. The inside panels were decoupaged, painted over in certain areas and sealed with clear glaze.
6. Bead strip inserts were painted and glazed with Antique Brown, to frame the decoupaged picture.
7. Raised stencil on the edge of the shelf front was used to replicate the beaded frame.
8. Two colours were blended together to paint the inside of the drawers and shelves.
9. The aged, weathered look was achieved using three colours on the inside panels and outside of drawers.
10. To re-emphasize and consolidate the birds in the decoupaged panels, bird transfers were added to the drawer sides.
